The breakfast was quite acceptable. It was included with the room charge. The breakfast room was a little small, but this kept the buffet from being too big.

The location, the maintenance, and the staff were all fantastic. The hotel provided a great place to explore the surrounding areas and the collaboration with the local onsen allowed for an excellent and memorable bathing experience. I especially enjoyed that aspect.

While Nagano is best known outside Japan as a Winter...
While Nagano is best known outside Japan as a Winter Olympics host city and a favourite place for people to ski in Winter, it is also the site of the Zenkō-ji Temple.
As one of the most important Buddhist sites in Japan it is extensive and beautifully landscaped. Despite the large number of visitors we felt calmed each of the times we walked through the grounds. You can also purchase a ticket (¥1,200) to climb the Niōmon Gate, visit the main Hondo and walk through the dark tunnel, turn the giant storehouse that contains a complete set of sutras, and see the museum in the war memorial pagoda at the rear of the complex.
Nagano itself is a nice prefectural capital surrounded by forested mountains. In the good late autumn weather it was beautiful and we enjoyed wandering the small streets finding little restaurants and stores, and looking at the interesting mix of old and very new architecture.
We didn't visit any of the popular museums and galleries as after almost 4 weeks in Japan we were "museumed out", but did stumble across the Nishinomon-Yoshinoya Sake Brewery which is well worth a visit, and had lunch at Unaginoyado Sumiyoshi - a well-regarded unagi restaurant.
There are also lots of scenic and nature locations to visit in the surrounding hills, but you need more time than we had to enjoy them.
Overall, Nagano was a bit of a surprise package and being just 1½ hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen I would recommend a visit as part of any Japan itinerary.

Handly location to use as a base for surrounding areas like Matsumoto and Obuse. Just be aware the train to Obuse is not on the JR or the IC/Suica/Pasmo and you'd need cash to buy the ticket.

Many different activities available in the area - cultural, historical, and natural. The Togakushi Shrine Pilgrimage and Kamikochi National Park were my favorites. Excellent souvenir shopping on the street in front of Zenkoji Temple. The city is very walkable. The train from Tokyo provides easy access. During hot summer months it is cooler in Nagano.
We stayed in a beautiful traditional Japanese room, with an attached private bathroom which was perfect for our needs. We opted to have both dinner and breakfast at the ryokan, and both meals were great. The location is a short bus ride from the train station, with easy access to both the main street of Nagano and Zenkoji Temple. We went for a short walk up to the temple after dinner, and it was lovely to see it lit up in the dark with no tourists around. Highly recommend booking this ryokan if you're visiting Nagano!
The owner made an effort to explain house rules well. English signs were clear, too. And he prepared travel guides. Non-Japanese should appreciate such things and be respectful. The man probably depends on this for income, and we get it for a VERY cheap price, unlike others that charge a lot so don't expect hotel-level accommodation. Travelers shouldn't behave like entitled guests.
The bed was cozy. Location was a good walking distance to Nagano station and same block as a nice grocery store. All you need is there.
Perfect ryokan in remote Japan. The experience was beyond expectations. The shrines in the area are superb! Everything was perfect and the hostess was very helpful. The food is amazing (but there's too much!)! The ryokan can be easily access by car from Nagano. It is a 35min scenic drive. I suggest nissan-rent-a-car right next to the train station. Everything went smoothly.
The hotel presents quite well and the staff were efficient, but after discovering the restaurant was seldom open and with the location somewhat remote from the train station area we were disappointed to have to drive everywhere.
The reception area was very attractive, but not being able to get breakfast etc was a disappointment.
Superb hotel ! Value for the money. Location is near to Nagano Station hence we walked to the hotel. The open air onsen at roof top is really cool. You will surely like it. Also, after 9:30 pm they provide free ramen noodles with limited portion if you missed to have dinner. Overall experience was really nice !
The location of the hotel is fairly close to the train station. Easy walk, or take a bus for a stop. 7/11 across the street is nice. Pretty close to the bars in the city. Loved that they had washer dryer in the building. Rooms were nice and clean. Free coffee and manga rentals, if you could ready japanese.
The location is fantastic, from Nagano train station you can use the footbridge that takes you to another side of the main road onto the 2nd level of the lift. Very nicely presented business hotel with all necessaries are provided. We are very impressed with our visited in Nagano, will definitely return.
The room was good, slightly bigger than the average Japanese hotel room (in our budget). Comfortable bed, lots of amenities (also for children with slippers and duck-shaped sponges).
TV, yukata, kettle,….
Good location with the bus and train station across the road.
And very friendly, helpful staff.
Location is very easy walk from major train station, bus stops and 7/11 closeby also. Everything was clean and well run. English speaking front desk, they kept our bags before check in also. Breakfast was Japanese style (not Western toast and cereal). It was plentiful and well run.
Very very close to the train station, so it was very easy to travel around Nagano. But the hotel and our room were very quiet.
The staff is nice and can speak English.
The hotel is very clean.
There are plenty of pillows and good curtains in the room.
Hotel room was huge compared to other rooms in japan. We were put on the 14th floor with beautiful views of the city and mountains. Staff was wonderful, and the restaurant had above average wood fire pizza. About a 15 minute walk to nagano station.
The hotel is right in front of the train station and that was really convenient for us. We arrived much earlier than the checkin time and the stuff was kind and offered us another room that was ready with no extra charge.
it is near in the JR station and had a public bath at the top floor with view of the city . The ice cream were unlimited to eat and during breakfast you can enjoy variety of cakes made from chateraise.
It was the biggest room we had in our entire one month trip in Japan and for the same price we'd pay for a tiny, hostel room in Tokyo.
We loved the onsen.
It's a 5 min walk from the train station.
Hotel is less than 10 minutes walk from the train station. They let us leave our bags as we arrived at 10a.m. Check-in and check-out were easy and the staff were efficient.
Best location for our stay in Nagano. Great area to walk around with lots of cosy bars and restaurants. Very close to Nagano Station for our tours out from the city
Convenient location close to Nagano station in the direction of Zenkoji temple
